KiwiSaver marks an important milestone in 2012: for the first time, eligible members will be able to access their retirement savings. It is timely, therefore, to consider how this ‘draw-down’ phase will affect the KiwiSaver landscape. While much time and thought has been devoted to the accumulation phase of retirement funding, the question that’s now emerging is: ‘what's next?’.

This paper explores the issues and canvasses solutions to the post-retirement challenge in New Zealand. It also raises several questions, which can only be answered by a robust discussion between KiwiSaver funds, the Government and the financial services sector.

Mercer hopes this is the beginning of a more focused debate about retirement funding for the future and we are taking an active role in the media to support our message.
