New Zealand, March 22, 2022 – In response to growing market demand for sustainable investing expertise, Mercer has announced the appointment of not-for-profit sector veteran Mark Longbottom in the newly-created role of Sustainable Investments Specialist.
Mr Longbottom was most recently the Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Southern Cross. He brings to Mercer more than 20 years’ experience in working with purpose-driven organisations across New Zealand and the United Kingdom in a range of leadership roles.
Martin Lewington, CEO of Mercer New Zealand, said Mr Longbottom’s extensive knowledge of the market would complement the deep expertise of Mercer’s global and regional sustainable investment consulting team.
“Mark’s experience in the not-for-profit sector is second to none. He has a strong understanding of the ESG needs of organisations, particularly among foundations, universities and iwi,” said Mr Lewington.
“It’s clear that investing sustainably is more important than ever among institutional and retail investors, particularly socially responsible global equities. With Mark as an integral member of our Sustainable Investment team, we can build on our capability and capacity to help local clients reach their investment goals,” he said.
Mr Longbottom said the demand for sustainable investing expertise in New Zealand would continue to rise.
“Investors are under more pressure and scrutiny to play their part in addressing the global systemic issues that are playing out at the expense of the environment and communities far and wide. This is no truer than for New Zealand’s investors, in a market where societal expectations are among the highest in the world when it comes to sustainability,” said Mr Longbottom.
“I’m excited to have joined Mercer, who has long been a leader and pioneer in the ESG space, and supporting the sustainable investment needs of clients in New Zealand,” he said.
The appointment of Mr Longbottom follows a string of announcements by the firm and industry accolades, including Mercer New Zealand’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, extensive ESG-focused enhancements to its KiwiSaver funds, being named a Responsible Investment Leader 2021 by the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA), and being awarded Environmental Finance’s Investment Consultant of the Year in the 2021 Sustainable Investment Awards.
Recognising the increasing demand among investors in ESG, Mercer has continued to invest in the growth of its Sustainable Investment team. Globally, Mercer’s dedicated Sustainable Investment team consists of 25 professionals, offering research, advice and solutions. Mr Longbottom will be based in Mercer’s Auckland office.
